Expert's Assistant chat
Customer: Hi my storage locker was broken into and is the same key for my apartment access. I do not feel safe anymore living at this place. My car was also broken into twice.
JA: What steps have you taken so far? Have you prepared or filed any paperwork?
Customer: I have a police report and have asked for immediate release from my lease to which they would not do unless I pay the fee to break the lease
JA: Where is the apartment located?
Customer: Dallas Texas
JA: Is there anything else the Lawyer should know before I connect you? Rest assured that they'll be able to help you.
Customer: No ma'am

I am so very sorry to hear of this issue. Once you have given your landlord notice of these issues, they have to fix the issue within a reasonable amount of time (generally 7 days). This could include additional security measures, etc. If your landlord does not do so, you can sue your landlord for a breach of the implied warranty of habitability and ask the judge to let you out of the lease and/or for monetary compensation. You can do this at your local small claims court.

You can do this by going to your local small claims court and filling out the complaint packet. You will then file it and serve it on the landlord. The judge will then hold a hearing to determine liability and damages.

If at anytime you need an attorney to assist you, you can find a local attorney by contacting your local bar association and asking for a referral to one. You can also contact your local legal aid society as they offer free and low cost services in these types of cases. Another good resource is to contact your local law schools as they often have clinics with attorneys that will assist in these types of cases. Again, I am sorry to hear of this issue. If you have any follow up questions, I will be very happy to assist you.
