If you have bought the car with finance, you can cancel the contract under the Credit Contracts and Consumer Finance Act 2003 provided you have done so promptly. If you did not use finance, then it may be more difficult to cancel unless you can show misrepresentation under the Consumer Guarantees Act, in that it cannot do something promised. I am not sure misunderstanding how a hybrid car works, is enough however.

If you paid cash it would be more difficult as if the car is otherwise in good condition and fit for purpose, then you do not have the right to cancel the contract
Chris The Lawyer, Expert
There is no right to cancel a contract unless there is a substantial breach. You can cancel a credit contract like a hire purchase loan, but not a straight purchase like yours

I cannot comment on the accuracy of that statement, but if you are a member of AA you could contact them and ask if this is true. If it was an important issue when you bought the car, as to the cost of maintenance, that could be an issue, but it would need to have been something which was foremost in your mind when you bought the car

At least one motoring driver says no
Lower maintenance costs
There is a common misconception that hybrids are more expensive to maintain and repair. However, in reality, they require less maintenance than traditional cars. With a greater reliance on the electric motor, the internal engine experiences less wear and tear and may allow you to have longer periods between oil changes. And thanks to regenerative braking, the brake pads experience less friction and heat, extending their lifespan .
