Hi My name is ***** ***** I am a New Zealand lawyer based in Wellington with more than 42 years of experience. I am here to help with your questions.
Customer
hi Chris
Customer
We are disputing a water usage bill with our realstate and Tauranga Council
Customer
we are thinking of going to tenancy tribunal
img

Chris The Lawyer, Expert

If there are leaks which are the responsibility of the landlord, which are causing the water bill to be excessive, you can make a claim to the Tenancy Tribunal

img

Chris The Lawyer, Expert

The taps and replacement are the responsibility of the landlord

Customer
we have had water problems in the past with a bad noisy leaky kitchen taps the property manager sent a plumber but all he did was change taps now they want us to pay $415 for 69 days of water usage its excessive we are good tenants out propety manager knows this and we never miss our rent

Chris The Lawyer, Expert

You should try to estimate the amount of water leaking if that is possible

img

Chris The Lawyer, Expert

Perhaps also talk to the local council about this. It is possible the water meter is faulty

img

Chris The Lawyer, Expert

If you can ask other neighbours what they are paying that would help

Customer
the realesate did change taps about 6 months ago but now they re saying the water meter was not working properly which they admit is not our fault but now they have slapped us with a excessive bill for water if we used that much water at the cost for 69 days that would mean we would need to be consuming 2000 liters of water a day at a cost of approx 22k a year which is crazy
img

Chris The Lawyer, Expert

Tell the landlord/property manager that if the meter is faulty, they are responsible and have to pay the excess. If they refuse, go to the Tribunal

Customer
my husbnd has been taking photos of the water meter also we spoke to council and because we are renting they cannot for privacy issues give us access to the water acct altho they did suggest getting the property manager to speck to owners to get access however niether they or council have done anything except to say its justified py it lol
Customer
theyh have since supposedly fixed the meter
img

Chris The Lawyer, Expert

You may need to file in the Tribunal then

Customer
sorry not 22k a year but 2200 if we are using the water usage they say we are wgich is ridiculouse
img

Chris The Lawyer, Expert

That does seem excessive

Customer
ok so does tribunal address water disputes
img

Chris The Lawyer, Expert

It is a fee charged by the landlord so the Tribunal can deal with this

Customer
ok thankyou so much
Customer
