Expert's Assistant chat
Customer: Hi, Im enquiring about making a private arrangement with the day to day carer of my children for child support, He is on a Work and Income payment and doesn't work - I do work, and I'm wondering how to go about setting up a private agreement so I.R.D. no longer charge me for child support
JA: Hi. How old are your children? What state do they live in?
Customer: 8 and 9, and they live in Dovedale, Tasman, NZ
JA: Is there an agreement for payment of child support?
Customer: No, I pay it directly through the I.R.D
JA: Is there anything else the Lawyer should know before I connect you? Rest assured that they'll be able to help you.
Customer: Don't think so

A private agreement is where you decide the amount of child support and arrange payments without us.

It's good to use a private agreement if you:

can agree on who should pay and how much

want to organise payments yourself

can rely on payments being made.

So the carer of the children needs to agree to the private arrangement. It is possible however that if his income is a WINZ benefit then they may not permit him to do so

Customer
does he need to call WINZ first then?

Yes, he should do that

Customer
Alright. Do you have any idea on what would be an acceptable amount per week for two children aged 8 and 9?

You may want to start with the figures assessed by Inland Revenue as a liable parent, and see if that is enough

Customer
cool thanks, I'll work on that
