Chris The Lawyer, Expert

HiI am a New Zealand lawyer based in Wellington and will help you with your question today. Please give me a minute to read the question
img

Chris The Lawyer, Expert

It is not possible to get a visitor visa at present due to the Covid border closedown. It is hard to say when this will change but possibly near the end of this year
Customer
Thanks but I have NZeTA with me currently but I need to verify the authenticity because it is saying something like I have to come in through cruise ship. I have checked on NZ immigration site and found it to be genuine but I still have some doubt because I used an agent and he has exhibited some funny trait lately
img

Chris The Lawyer, Expert

It doesn’t matter if you have that because with the Covid restrictions you still need permission and that is difficult
Customer
The agent didn't inform me of all this before, he now said we would have to pass through an island to gain access into NZ. So with what I have currently, I cannot access NZ directly but through another island.
Customer
Is there a way to at least verify the authenticity of the NzeTA?
img

Chris The Lawyer, Expert

You could not come via an island so that sounds strange. You could contact Immigration direct to ask if your NZ ETA is genuine
Customer
are you there?

Chris The Lawyer, Expert

Hi
Customer
you are not answering me again
Customer
I have been waiting for your response for over 10minutes, have you left the chat ? Let me know so I won't be wasting my time thinking you would respond.
Customer
How can I verify?
Is there a way to regularize what I have currently such that I would be able to gain access to NZ directly?
How easy is it to transit to a work permit from a visitor's visa?
Would you be able to help? If yes, what is the process and what is the likely cost?
img

Chris The Lawyer, Expert

I have answered can you not see?
img

Chris The Lawyer, Expert

You cannot get access with the borders closed, either directly or through an island
Customer
I am clear on that but I am asking, just in case the border gets opened and I gain access into NZ, how easy is it to transit to a work visa?
Customer
can you help out?
img

Chris The Lawyer, Expert

We do not offer direct client support but general advice. It isn’t easy to move to a work visa but the key is getting a job offer on the skill shortage list
Customer
I have checked the skilled shortage list and my skill is listed.
Customer
But I dont know if employers would be willing to hire me and give me documents to process my application
Customer
lastly, would you be able to recommend immigration lawyer who would be able to assist verify what I have currently and help in transiting or guide on a better route to immigrate ?
Customer
you are not answering my last set of questions
img

Chris The Lawyer, Expert

Sorry the software is slow
img

Chris The Lawyer, Expert

But the usual procedure is to apply for jobs, then use the work offer for the work visa. Most don’t need a lawyer
Customer
I know that and I also aware that employers would usually want to hire people on ground rather than wait to bring someone from outside
Customer
there is no way I can get a work permit without getting a job first
img

Chris The Lawyer, Expert

That is correct, so getting the visitor visa is useful to have job interviews
Customer
my point but I also have a fear which is transition from visitor visa to work permit
Customer
something like an open work permit which is not tied to any employer
Customer
lastly, I need someone to help verify what I have currently and advise on the authenticity of it and if there is any possibility of regularizing it if it is not genuine or has a fault
img

Chris The Lawyer, Expert

You are very unlikely to get an open work visa, but you can try for a work to residence visa. Once you have residency you can work freely
Customer
is work to residence tied to any employer ?
can I get that without a job offer?
img

Chris The Lawyer, Expert

You will need a specific job offer
Customer
okay
Customer
is there anyone who can help verify the NZeTA I have?
Customer
I would appreciate it if you can refer me to someone, a lawyer etc

They are normally issued electronically so I wonder if yours is real. If you want a lawyer to assist I suggest Laurent Law in Auckland
Customer
Well, it is meant to be electronic travel authority and it read that it should be presented at the port of entry
Customer
I can share a copy with you if you would like to see it
