Customer: Hi there, I just wanted to get some legal advice before possibly escalating a case to court. In New Zealand, the age of consent is 20, and in America, the age of consent is 18. Back in 2015, I was 18, and I dated a 16-year-old while in New Zealand. Does this consider both of us minors? The long story short is that the 16-year-old has come back five years later to create false accusations and lies about the relationship slandering my name and my girlfriend's name. It is a mix of defamation, slander, sexual harassment, false accusations, collateral damage, and mental health damage that that person has caused to both myself and my girlfriend. As we have an online image (brand), this has severely hurt our business and has caused us to lose thousands in revenue and a potentially successful business. They have also breached copyright laws and continue to use my girlfriends work without permission.I just wanted to know if this is something I can take to court or sue them for? We have evidence and proof that nothing mentioned by this person ever occurred and that it was all a made-up story.Kind Regards,

In New Zealand that relationship is legal. The age of consent in New Zealand is in fact 16 and not 20. If this person is causing you that degree of trouble, and is in New Zealand, you could make a complaint to the New Zealand police under the Harmful Digital Communications Act, which is a New Zealand law which prohibits that sort of communication online. You have done nothing illegal by having a relationship with someone who is 16 under New Zealand law

Hi Chris, thanks for the reply. How about escalating this case? As the damages caused by this fake accusation has done huge damage to the business my girlfriend and I run. That individual is resided in Pennsylvania America. Does this change anything at all?
