Thank you for your patience

In order to obtain compensation from the veterans administration the applicant must prove three things:

1. They have a current medical condition.

2. The medical condition was caused by or aggravated by some event that happened while on active duty or while in formal training preparing for active duty service.

3. That there is “continuity of care” for this condition (meaning that there is evidence that the medical condition has persisted from the event in service to date)

IF you can prove all 3? Then you are entitled to compensation. It really is that simple.

What you are describing here, I understand that the vet was exposed to the cold while in a duty status and now has COPD? You want to know if there can be a link?

Sure…that is possible. But you have to prove the link…the doctor for the vet needs to be able to write a letter that says they believe that the current issue (COPD) was caused by the cold weather operations. IF they are willing to write such a letter the vet has a great chance of winning the claim.

Please let me know if you have more questions. Happy to help if I can.

Do you think that smoking cigarettes could be agritvated if I smoke some be for service or smoke from heavy artillery smok

P. Simmons, Expert

Perhaps...again, this is a question for the doctor.  The standard here is did your service cause your current medical issue.

SO, for example, if your service was very stressful and that caused you to smoke a lot? And that led to your COPD?  That can be a basis to get compensation (if your doctor will write a letter saying that your service was the cause of the increased smoking).
