Expert's Assistant chat
Customer: How much should I expect to spend on an entertainment lawyer to review a book contract?
JA: What state are you in? It matters because laws vary by location.
Customer: Yes, I do know that. The publisher is in New Jersey. I'm currently in Seattle.
JA: What steps have you taken so far?
Customer: I have booked an appointment with a reputable lawyer. It appears his rates, or if he gives it to one of his associates, will be fair. Yet it will be pricey too, for me.
JA: Is there anything else the Lawyer should know before I connect you? Rest assured that they'll be able to help you.
Customer: I think the most important thing is to have a fair contract. The content has great potential to adapt to other media.

Hi and thank you for using JustAnswer. My name is ***** ***** I would be happy to help you with your question. Please allow me a few moments to review the details! Be right back!

Just a general disclaimer that this conversation is for informational purposes only. I am licensed Florida attorney, however, you would need to retain a lawyer to take any legal action and/or preserve any of your legal rights.

Hi Lissett, I'm ready. The contract is 9 pages. The attorney I may go with charges $600/hr but his associates charge less, around $350 to $500. This attorney has numerous connections and his very experienced in film and TV. My book is a graphic novel with great potential to adapt to other media. I could be spending too much money just on a hunch that this lawyer could, at some point, help secure film rights. I don't know.

Median ranges for attorney hourly rates vary depending on the location. For instance, in Florida, the median range is around $300 an hour. In New Jersey, it seems like the median range is from approximately $200-460 an hour. However, attorneys are free to charge more commensurate with their experience, expertise, knowledge, and time in practice. How much you are willing to pay for services is up to you. You can try to negotiate prices or shop around for other attorneys in the area, and it'll come down to the person you feel will best represent your interests and price, of course. You can certainly find more affordable options, but it comes down to whether you trust that this attorney can help you. Hope this helps!
