Hello – My name is ***** ***** I’m happy to assist you today. I am a Canadian lawyer who is able to answer immigration law questions.

Can you tell me more about the basis of her asylum claim ? Has your friend approached the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner of Refugees) office in Turkey to be referred to Canada as an asylum claimant ?

Thank you for this additional information.

I am very sorry to hear about what she has been through.

If your friend wants to be resettled in Canada as a refugee claimant or asylum seeker, she will have to be referred for resettlement through the UNHCR (UN High Commissioner of Refugees) office in Turkey.

If UNHCR does refer her for resettlement, she will be eligible to be sponsored through a private group sponsorship to Canada.

In order to make a claim as a convention refugee, your friend has to be outside of her home country and demonstrate that she cannot return due to a well -founded fear of persecution based on race, religion, political opinion, nationality or membership in a particular social group such as gender or sexual orientation. To make an asylum claim, she must be outside of her home country and be seriously affected by civil war or armed conflict or been denied basic human rights on an ongoing basis.

Here is a link to Canada Immigration's website which explains resettlement in Canada

Hello.
Thanks for all your help.I asked my friend in Turkey if she tried to seek asylum in Turkey and she said yes she did.She went to two police stations for help to seek asylum and was helped at all.At one station they told her Turkey has enough refugees.
One other reason why she even wants to get out of Turkey is that the army boyfriend in Africa knew were she was and sent her messages that she will come first her.She still got the messages. The man used different phones to send messages as she keeps blocking him off.He has capability to travel as he is been in Turkey and Dubai before. She is so scared of her life.
She was telling me she was trying to run away as far as possible if she cant reach Canada or USA.
So that's the situation now
Thanks for you help

Hello again - I would suggest that your friend contact the UNHCR office because it is the globally recognized agency for overseas asylum seekers. Going to the police station to seek asylum is not the same thing.

If the UNHCR does help her and recognizes her asylum claim, she can be referred for resettlement to Canada. If she does not get this referral, she cannot be resettled from overseas and will have to find a way to come to Canada to make a claim when she arrives.

However at the current time, due to the COVID 19 travel restrictions, the airlines are screening passengers to make sure they will be allowed entry into Canada and if she does not have any immediate or extended family members in Canada who are citizens or permanent residents, she will not be allowed entry.

Hope this provides clarification.
