Customer: I have a lease that started in April of this year and I paid first months rent and the security deposit and never got the keys or paperwork.
JA: Because laws vary from place to place, can you tell me what state the property is in?
Customer: New York
JA: What are the terms of the lease? Any issues related to maintenance or upkeep?
Customer: One year lease from April 1st 2021 to April 1st 2022.I paid for the month of April and have not been able to step foot in the house.I believe I have been scammed.
JA: Is there anything else the Lawyer should know before I connect you? Rest assured that they'll be able to help you.
Customer: For a long time I didn't hear from the landlord when he told me he would give me the keys and paperwork. He went off grid, couldn't contact him at all and when he finally responded he said he didn't respond because he was stressed out because his wife had died of Covid-19.Then he said I will give you the keys and paperwork and that was in May.I haven't heard anything since.

From your facts, your payments must be refunded.  You can pursue in small claims court or first have a lawyer make demand under threat of court.  Site rules do not permit us to take on cases. Here, I wish I could. I can offer resources for hiring counsel locally, often on commission or pro bono basis. I would be happy to share that information with you. Please let me know if that would help.
