Customer: How much does a step child adoption cost in Las Vegas, NV?
JA: Have you filed any adoption papers in family court?
Customer: No, not yet. Or is this something that we go through with a lawyer?
JA: Do the biological parents consent to the adoption?
Customer: The father is non existent. I have absolutely no contact with him.
JA: Is there anything else the Lawyer should know before I connect you? Rest assured that they'll be able to help you.
Customer: No, that's all. It's for my 2 boys, my husband would like to adopt.

Hello and thank you for using Just Answer!

Felicia S Esq., Expert

The cost varies depending on which attorney you use- but you can expect to spend between $3-10 thousand depending on if the biological Father responds when served with the case or not.

img

Felicia S Esq., Expert

Would you like me to send you some local lawyers that could file this case for you?

Customer
Thank you. How much if he does not respond? Would that be more?
img

Felicia S Esq., Expert

If he does not respond it's a quicker and cheaper process because you can default him and terminate his rights.

img

Felicia S Esq., Expert

It would increase the cost if he responded and contested the action and wanted a trial. But if he doesn't respond after being served or consents to the adoption, then it saves time and money.

Are there any other questions I can assist you with today?

Customer
What happens to all of the back child support he owes? Does that become terminated after the adoption is finalized?
img

Felicia S Esq., Expert

He would still owe any court ordered child support that has acrrued up until the point that the adoption is granted. At the point of adoption, the adoptive parent replaces the biological parent who's rights are terminated.

Customer
Awesome.
Would you suggest going through a family lawyer or just doing it yourself?
img

Felicia S Esq., Expert

These can get complex as if you don't know where father is located, there's a different process for serving him via mail or publication, so my recommendation is to at least consult with an attorney to learn the process before deciding if you want to proceed with a lawyer or not.

And if he objects to the action, then there may be a trial which you'd want a lawyer to assist with.

Customer
Thank you so much!
