Expert's Assistant chat
Customer: Is it legal for religious groups to discriminate against gay people?
JA: When did this begin? Has any religious discrimination been documented or reported?
Customer: Yes a Quaker group called Friends United Meeting has an explicit policy of not allowing LGBTQ people to hold any leadership positions in there organization.
JA: What kind of workplace is this (private sector, public sector, etc.)? How many employees?
Customer: It's a branch of the Quaker religion. Most of its members are in Kenya but there are also thousands in the U.S.
JA: Have the friends talked to a lawyer about religious discrimination?
Customer: I doubt it, but I don't know.
JA: Is there anything else the Lawyer should know before I connect you? Rest assured that they'll be able to help you.
Customer: I don't think so.

This is a complicated and nuanced questions.

Religious organizations are pretty much free to do whatever they want and decide is a value to them because of the First Amendment establishment clause.   Courts will not interpret or interfere with religious beliefs or practices.

As to individuals, people are allowed to act upon bonafide religious beliefs.

However, there are rules of public accommodations and there is a different between active and passive actions.

For example, a wedding baker would not be required to bake a specialized wedding cake for use at a same-sex marriage if such a proceeding violated his religious beliefs.  However, it would be illegal to ban a person from purchasing an already prepared wedding cake from a bake shop just because the owner knew the couple was gay and objected to their sexual orientation.
