My son collected unemployment benefits from California and Minnesota at the same time. He had work history from both

Expert's Assistant chat
Customer: My son collected unemployment benefits from California and Minnesota at the same time. He had work history from both states and thought his benefits would be prorated. He applied for California unemployment first as a contractor when he was laid off in March due to the pandemic. He didn't hear from them for 3 months, so he applied for Minnesota unemployment
JA: When did your son start working there?
Customer: He started working in California in January 2020 and was laid off in March 2020 due to the pandemic. It took EDD three months to finally approve his application but in the meantime appliedfor MN unemployment since he lived and worked there in 2019. He was immediately approved and thought his benefits would be prorated between both states as a multitude application
JA: Has he talked to a lawyer about the unemployment?
Customer: No he hasn't. Now both MN and EDD have disqualified him due to collecting from both states. MN sent him a notice to repay all money owing, and he paid every cent back. Now MN is telling him that he cannot collect benefits until EDD closes his file which won't happen now until March 27 the end date of the new extension. How can collect unemployment again? He's living in MN now
JA: The Employment Lawyer will be able to walk you through that. Anything else you want the Lawyer to know before I connect you?
Customer: No I can't think of anything

Unfortunately there is no way to speed up EDD process — I’m sorry for your son’s situation
Customer
I didn't think there was anything we could do but wait until March 27th so EDD can cancel his account. I was hoping EDD could just transfer his claim to MN. Thanks for your help!
