I’m sorry to hear about your issues here, hopefully, we can solve them quickly.

A parole-eligible inmate serving a felony sentence in the custody of the Department of Corrections is automatically considered for parole. No application is necessary.

Most parole-eligible inmates are statutorily eligible for parole after serving one-third of their prison sentence. However, few inmates are granted parole at their initial eligibility date.

A decision to grant any type of clemency requires an affirmative vote by a majority of the members of the Parole Board. Excluding life sentences, at the time of consideration, the Board will establish a Tentative Parole Month (TPM) in the future or will deny parole entirely.

Georgia inmates (who are eligible for parole) have a right to be considered for parole, but they do not have a right or "liberty interest" which requires release on parole.

In most cases, inmates are eligible for parole after serving one-third of their prison sentence, unless they have committed certain offenses that do not allow parole.

If he is at month 8 of 20 months and he may be eligible for parole. He should be past 1/3rd at this point.

You can consult with a local criminal lawyer to see what his chances of getting parole are. You can find a highly-rated local lawyer on a lawyer review site like Avvo.com for your city. You can also use https://find.lawyer.com/justanswer.php?1 which will get you a free consultation and 25% off legal fees for being a JustAnswer member. If you cannot afford a lawyer and are low/no income, you can search your county legal aid office on Google for their contact information and contact them for some free legal help.

But typically an inmate doesn't file for parole, the Board automatically takes that up once he becomes eligible.

But he should be soon if not already if he has served 8 of 20 months now; the exact days would have to be counted up though.

Please let me know if this has answered your question fully. I hope this information is helpful to you. If you need additional assistance or have follow-up questions, please reply to my message below, and I will respond as soon as I can.

Correct, the best you could do is retain a criminal lawyer to try to push it. But parole is initiated by the board.
