Hello again,

.

Sure, you can post another question whenever you like. I am in and out of my office today so there may be a little of a delay in my responses..

.

.

thanks

Customer
Good afternoon, I am completely devastated as you can understand what should my next step be?

Barrister, Expert

Sorry for the delay, just got back in my office...

.

Have you actually confirmed that it is really the person you know from school?

.

Or is it just someone who says they were from your school and you haven't actually seen them personally in a long time?

.

.

thanks

Customer
No worries, Thank you for your help. It is actually someone that I knew in High School her name is***** was the one who first contacted me about the Grant.

Barrister, Expert

Right, I understand that is who they claim to be... But have you actually met up with them personally and recognize them from school?

.

The reason is that these scammers will often look up old yearbooks and then contact people claiming to be a friend to get them to trust them as part of the scam...

img

Barrister, Expert

Or is this all online or phone call contact?

Customer
No, I have only texted with her and Facebook messenger with her. I have not seen her in over 20 years!

Ok, then it is extremely unlikely this is actually the person you knew in high school... But at this point, if you have contact information for them, then you need to visit the local District Attorney with all the info you have about this person so that if the DA filed a formal charge, they may be able to catch this person as part of the scam which could lead back to the primary scammers..

.

Try not to tip off the scammer and contact the DA to see if they will take action and play along with them but absolutely do not send them any more money....

.

To be very honest with you, it is incredibly hard to catch these people as they operate out of the country normally with fake accounts, but it wouldn't be impossible to do so if you can work with the DA to lure them into making personal contact...

.

.

thanks

Customer
Thank you for all your help. I will go to the local DA's office.

Barrister, Expert

You are very welcome. And the quicker you act here, the greater the chance that the DA can take action to possibly catch these scammers and get some or all your money back...

.

And remember, everything on the internet or email is a scam until you absolutely prove it otherwise... If someone is asking you to send them money promising you free money, a lottery, an inheritance, etc. it is absolutely guaranteed to be a scam..

.

.

I hope everything works out for you..
