Customer: Hi, my father would like to Wire transfer money to me as gift, for deed of gift letter, can I draft myseft and ask my father to sign or I need to find a lawyer for me with this letter?
JA: What state are you in? It matters because laws vary by location.
Customer: BC, Canada
JA: What steps have you taken so far?
Customer: My father is not Canadian and he is in HK now. No money transfer yet until I know what should I do for the deed of gift letter
JA: The Lawyer will be able to walk you through that. Is there anything else the Lawyer should know before I connect you? Rest assured that they'll be able to help you.
Customer: as I said, my father is in HK, and he could only sign the letter in HK or should I wait until he come to Canada for visit after the pandemic is over

So if your father is just sending you money as a gift why do you feel that you need a letter?

Customer
My accountant told me before that it would be needed for tax purposes (to prove that it is a gift and should not consider as income).
Customer
Is it true?

Here is the answer to your query. Please do not hesitate to ask any follow up questions related to this response and know that I will respond as soon as I can.

It could help if you are questioned but I don't see why it would necessarily be needed.

But if you really want one your father can simply send you an email or a letter stating that he is sending you this money out of love and affection and it is gift and not a loan etc.

Does that help?

Customer
Thanks
