My family sent rattlesnake powder in pill form to me through UPS from the states and the package has been analyzed and detained at customs. UPS called and told me the customs officer is asking for information on the package in order to be released, they want to know what it is, where is it from, the label of the product, where did I get it and how much I payed and a piece of ID from me, I need to provide this or the package will be return to the sender. Or I could go and talk personally to the customs officer.
I just want to know if it's ilegal to have rattlesnake powder shipped to you from the US and if I could get in trouble for providing the information they are requesting along with my personal information (ID) if that would count as "importing" a rattlesnake, and if so what would happen? Thank you

Thank you for your patience. Importing goods is federally regulated and can be considered a terrestrial animal by-product import, which is relatively complicated - but generally speaking, it may require approval from the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora

It is not necessarily illegal to import, but you absolutely would have to provide proof of origin, the type of processing and treatment that it has gone through, etc.

img

you wouldn't get in trouble per say, but it would just be returned to the sender

Customer
Thank you for your answer, would it be the same if I were to take it with me in my suitcase when traveling?
img

ALLawyer, Expert

Yes, it would be the same because you would have to declare it

Customer
