Customer: Good afternoon. Iam a mother of a 23year old son who fel sick from last December till now. My son had no Manitoba Health Card. He was charged $200 .000. He does not have the money and I as a mother is trying to help paying in installments but the hospital won't accept my offer and Iam threatened to be reported to board agency for deportation. me and my mentally ill son. May you please advice on this matter.
JA: Have you talked to a Manitoba lawyer about this?
Customer: No not yet
JA: What steps have you taken so far?
Customer: I went with my pay stubs and my budget as they requested but the amount Iam left with after all is done was not satisfactory to them. Iam afraid because Iam a work permit holder but have also applied for Permanent Residency of which I did all stages required only Covid seems to slow the process.
JA: Is there anything else the Lawyer should know before I connect you? Rest assured that they'll be able to help you.
Customer: My son is also on my Permanent Residency application. He was registered with Manitoba University but could not have Blue Cross insurance coverage because he had not paid his tuition fee.

Hello – My name is ***** ***** I’m happy to assist you today. I am a Canadian lawyer who is able to answer immigration law questions.

I am sorry to hear this happened.

To clarify - Was our son charged $200 or $200,000 by the hospital ?

Hi - Since I have not heard back from you, I can provide a response based only on the information you have provided so far.

If your son has incurred a debt with the hospital which he cannot pay and the hospital is not accepting the payment agreement you have suggested, I would suggest that you contact the Community Law Centre which services your area to help you write submissions to the billing department of the hospital to negotiate the amount you owe for compassionate reasons because of you and your son's circumstances.

Community Law Centres are legal aid funded centres which provides legal service to low income people in Manitoba.

Here is a link to the CLC's in Manitoba which has the names and addresses of the CLCs

Furthermore, even if the hospital is not willing to accept your payment plan and treats the money your son owes as a bad debt, since this is a civil debt, it will not affect you and your son's application for permanent residence. Only criminal charges and convictions will effect immigration applications.

Hope this answers your question.

Thank you very for this information. Im going to contact the organization you have suggested. The money owed is $142,800 sorry the misprint. This money accumulated due to my son being admitted 3 times with the same condition of Catatonia since December.
