Expert's Assistant chat
Customer: Hi, I'm therapist that does work online. I buy licenses to use different programs with my clients. For example, I use videos from a licensed program called Everyday Speech that show kids having social interactions. Sometimes I take screenshots of particular points in the videos, and put them on a powerpoint presentation so that I can discuss that particular point in the video. Does that infringe on copyright if I only use that powerpoint within a therapy session and do not reproduce it for distribution?
JA: Has an application or legal action been filed?
Customer: No. Not at all. Just curious about what is permittted.
JA: Have you talked to a lawyer? What documentation do you have?
Customer: No, I haven't talked to a lawyer. I have receipts for the licenses I bought to use the material though.
JA: Anything else you want the Lawyer to know before I connect you?
Customer: no, that's all for now

Please note that the experts don’t text so there may be a bit of a delay. If you don’t answer back for a while I may not be online when you do but I will never desert you and will check back often. As well, as I am working from home it is possible that I will be interrupted but I will always return back as soon as I can.

I am sorry to hear of this difficult situation.

Are you concerned because instead of showing the video you are showing a screen shot of the video?

Customer
thanks Debra. I look forward to hearing what you have to say. I'm multitasking a bit on my end too. No worries if this conversation takes place over some time.
Customer
I'm not sure if buying the right to play the video gives me the right to manipulate images that I took as screenshots

I can't see why it wouldn't. You're paying to be able to use the video online for therapy. There's no reason why you could not take a screenshot instead of actually playing the video.

The only concern would be is it if one of your patients thought that that was your work so you should make it clear that you did not create the work that you were displaying by way of screenshot.

Does that make sense?

Customer
That makes sense within the therapy room, thank you. Would the same apply to creating visual reminders of the lessons that families could print off and use at home. Alternatively, could a school use such a visual, created from the same screenshots, in a public school classroom? And could these visuals be given out as reminders in general As long as I don't charge for them?

I think you need to confirm this with the organization that provided the licence. I am just not sure.
