Please note that the experts don’t text so there may be a bit of a delay. If you don’t answer back for a while I may not be online when you do but I will never desert you and will check back often. As well, as I am working from home it is possible that I will be interrupted but I will always return back as soon as I can.

I am sorry to hear of this difficult situation.

Does your stepmother have someone she has appointed under a power of attorney for when she is no longer competent?

You don't need a phone call. It's expensive and you can't actually access the service from the UK anyway. I don't take calls. I just woke online.

Your step- mother can easily do a new power of attorney. She can even get one off the Internet but she needs two people who are not family members to be her witnesses. Because of Covid it is possible for her to get the witnesses to sign remotely if necessary.

She actually needs two separate documents. She needs a continuing power of attorney for her care decisions and she needs a continuing power of attorney for her financial decisions.

Perhaps it would be best for her to retain a lawyer. She may need to redo her wheel now in fact given that your dad has passed away.

What you can do to find a lawyer is one of the following things.

You can contact the Law Society and use their Lawyer Referral Service. You will be given the name of a lawyer and can consult with the lawyer and the first half hour will be free.

Here is a link to the site:

https://lsrs.lso.ca/lsrs/welcome

The number is:

1-***-***-**** or
***-***-**** in Calgary

Or you can check on a site called lexpert. This is a legal directory of leading lawyers and law firms throughout Canada and is well-respected by the legal community.

Here's the link to their website:

I am so sorry for your loss.

Does that help?
