Hello - My name is ***** ***** I'm happy to assist you today. I am a Canadian lawyer who is able to answer immigration law questions.

When you left Canada after overstaying, did you leave Canada voluntarily or did Canada Immigration ask you to leave ?

Customer
I left voluntarily.

I see - Can you tell me why you did not finish your course of study and how long you overstayed for ?

Customer
I was short on funds. Around 6 months and under. I need to look at the exact dates. I have contacted my school to continue. They have kept me on a waiting list for the May semester to continue. I wanted to get an idea of what I need to do in terms with going forward. I’m in contact with my school

In that case, you need to make an application for a new study permit. Are you outside of Canada now ?

Customer
I am outside of Canada. I can get a new permit after I receive a letter of acceptance Yes? Also will this be like renewing my old permit or a new one?

Has your old study permit expired ?

Customer
my old permit has expired. So I get the acceptance letter from the college and then apply for a new permit? Or what is the best way to go ahead with the process?

JJL11, Expert

If you get a new acceptance letter, you have to apply for another study permit, the same way you did the first time since your old study permit has expired.

I would caution you that you may be asked to explain why you did not finish your studies the first time. However, if you have proof that you have enough money to finish your studies this time, this may not be an issue.

Customer
Okay this is included when I apply and have to show funds for the school yes? Okay any other things I need to know about ?

The three main items you need are a valid passport, acceptance letter and proof of funds.

Here is a link from Canada Immigration's website which details how to apply

Hope this helps.

Customer
