I am sorry to hear of this difficult situation.

Did the employer say actual lies about you to others or just state a nasty opinion?

Then you, or a lawyer acting for you, can send them a letter demanding they cease and desist from defaming you and demanding a written retraction and threatening a lawsuit.

Then if they don't agree you can sue for damage to your reputation. You can sue in Small Claims Court and self-represent but it would really make the most sense to have a lawyer send that demand letter.

What you can do to find a lawyer is one of the following things.

You can contact the Law Society and use their Lawyer Referral Service. You will be given the name of a lawyer and can consult with the lawyer and the first half hour will be free.
