Absolutely.

Customer
My employer of 10 yrs has sent an inflammatory letter to the oil company we contract for. Instead of completing an in-house investigation beforehand. The allegations are false but now my name and reputation are in question with the Oil company. How do I proceed from here?

You have a case for defamation if character. Can you tell me the state and county where this occurred?

Customer
This happened in Alberta Canada. The letter was emailed on July 27th. There has been no investigation done at all. Am I allowed to request such allegations in written form?

I am a lawyer in Canada and happy to step in.

I am sorry to hear of this difficult situation.

Did the employer say actual lies about you to others or just state a nasty opinion?

Customer
It was an unproven allegation that hadn't even been investigated yet. Yes this allegation is completely untrue. I have not been given a letter of said written complaint.
Customer
This unproven allegation is in email form to the said Oil Company we contract for

Then you, or a lawyer acting for you, can send them a letter demanding they cease and desist from defaming you and demanding a written retraction and threatening a lawsuit.

Then if they don't agree you can sue for damage to your reputation. You can sue in Small Claims Court and self-represent but it would really make the most sense to have a lawyer send that demand letter.

What you can do to find a lawyer is one of the following things.

You can contact the Law Society and use their Lawyer Referral Service. You will be given the name of a lawyer and can consult with the lawyer and the first half hour will be free.

The number is:

1-***-***-**** or
***-***-**** in Calgary

Or you can check on a site called lexpert. This is a legal directory of leading lawyers and law firms throughout Canada and is well-respected by the legal community.

Here's the link to their website:

http://www.lexpert.ca/directory/find-lawyers-or-law-firms/

Does that help as a starting point?

Please feel free to post back with any follow-up questions you may have. If you don't have any then I hope I have earned a 5 star rating but if you don't feel that I have please don't hesitate to reply back and let me know what more I can do to assist you. Finally, please know that even after you rate me I will be here for you and you can ask follow-up questions if you think of them later on at no further charge of course.

Customer
Thank you this is helpful and I will go through the process you suggested and find a lawyer to send a demand letter of cease and desist. You have been very helpful thanks.
