Expert's Assistant chat
Customer: Does the BC human rights commission get involved with discrimination cases which come from Strata councils bullying and harassing owners of condos in the strata that they don't like.
JA: Have the owners discussed this discrimination issue with a manager or HR? Or with a lawyer?
Customer: I have brought it forth with a meeting of all the council last year. This year they brought in a management company and the manager is now starting to do the same from the management company. I just informed his company of his behaviour.
JA: Is the workplace "at will" or union? Is the job hourly or salaried?
Customer: This has been going on since I and my partner moved into the complex almost 7 years ago.
JA: Anything else you want the Lawyer to know before I connect you?
Customer: I have tons of proof of this discrimination which I obtained from Strata Act access to information.

When you talk about discrimination are you talking about the owners being treated differently because of their race, colour, religion etc.

Customer
We are being bullied and harassed since we moved into the building which is the direct cause of the discrimination happening. We are a married gay couple.

If you are being treated different because you are gay you very well may have a reason to file a complaint with the human rights tribunal. The Human Rights Code does cover Stratas.

I suggest you call human rights Tribunal tomorrow to discuss this issue and to find out whether they think that you can prove this is relating to the fact that you are gay.

Here is a link to their website:

Please feel free to post back with any follow-up questions you may have. If you don't have any then I hope I have earned a 5 star rating but if you don't feel that I have please don't hesitate to reply back and let me know what more I can do to assist you. Finally, please know that even after you rate me I will be here for you and you can ask follow-up questions if you think of them later on at no further charge of course.

Customer
thank you Debra. Well we are for sure being treated differently with different rules always put on us but don't know how to tie it into our being gay. They are definitely also bullying and harassing us too. I have made an appointment with the HR clinic on Wed June 3.
