Customer: Hello,I can’t speak for Alberta’s processes but in Saskatchewan it is very common for us to place children with family caregivers (e.g. under a Place of Safety, the shorter assessment we did in the summer) for a period before we determine their long-term ability to care for the children with a Home Study. I personally prefer to do Places of Safety first, as it’s different actually caring for children VS just talking about your ability to care for them in a Home Study interview. The children often have needs/ the caregivers have challenges that come up and we need to work on for them to be good long-term caregivers. Saskatchewan’s policy is not to do Places of Safety for Interprovincial requests; an exception was made in the summer because the children were already with you in Saskatchewan and we did not know if they could return to their placement in Alberta. Alberta asked for another Place of Safety in 2020, however since the children were not with you and they did not report immediate concerns, Saskatchewan’s management did not approve this and instead asked me to complete an expedited Home Study. I don’t know for sure, but it sounds like Alberta plans to place the children with you if/when the Home Study is complete, while they go to court and present the Home Study to a judge to determine if they will grant you Private Guardianship. Courts have been delayed due to COVID-19 so their concern may be how long it will take to go through court for Private Guardianship and they may want to have the children with you while court is going on. This way, when they go to court they can also hopefully tell the judge you have been successfully caring for the children for X amount of time.Got this info?
