Customer: We are renters and our roof is rotted and leaking. The leaking has resulted in mold in the ceiling insulation and the ceiling drywall has started to come down in some places. The master bedroom is no longer in living condition and we've been displaced to the much smaller spare room. We paid January rent in protest and the leaking has only got worse as the homeowner has not deemed the repair an emergency repair. What kind of retribution are we entitled to?
JA: Because laws vary from place to place, can you tell me what state the property is in?
Customer: Township of *****, *****tish Columbia
JA: What are the terms of the lease? Any issues related to maintenance or upkeep?
Customer: Lease has moved into month to month. Past issue in a separate suite where piping burst. That issue has already been resolved.
JA: Anything else you want the Lawyer to know before I connect you?
Customer: Not looking to sue, just want to know our rights and any compensation or deductions we may be entitled to.

I am sorry to hear of this difficult situation.

This is entirely unacceptable of course. As I am sure you know it is the Landlord's responsibility to keep the home in good repair.

You can take the landlord to the Board to get an order requiring the landlord to make the repairs and at the same time seek a rent abatement for the time you had to suffer this way.

I suggest you call them on Monday and run the facts by them. Here is a link to their contact information:

Does that help?

Please feel free to post back with any follow-up questions you may have. If you don't have any then I hope I have earned a 5 star rating but if you don't feel that I have please don't hesitate to reply back and let me know what more I can do to assist you. Finally, please know that even after you rate me I will be here for you and you can ask follow-up questions if you think of them later on at no further charge of course.
