JA: Since estate law varies from place to place, can you tell me what state this is in?
Customer: Sorry. We are in Canada.
JA: What documents or supporting evidence do you have?
Customer: I have her birth certificate, driver license and social insurance number. i also have a certified copy of the death certificate.
JA: Anything else you want the Lawyer to know before I connect you?

Did you wife's aunt live in Canada?

And has your wife died?

Customer
My wife's aunt lived in Toronto Ontario Canada and my wife is still alive

So just to confirm then, the aunt has no living spouse, parents, kids or siblings and your wife is the only niece and there are no nephews?

Where do you live?

Why did you wait 6 years or so to deal with this?

Customer
My wife is the niece by marriage, her uncle divorced his wife 2 years before she died. My wife is the trustee for her uncle's estate and that's how we found all these details about his ex wife. The person we are asking about has no living relatives in Canada and no will.
Customer
We live in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

You can apply to administer the estate but your spouse will not inherit so it doesn't really make sense to do this.

Because she was divorced and died intestate her relatives in Finland would inherit if any.

But your spouse will not inherit even if no relatives can be found.

Do you see what I mean?

Please feel free to post back with any follow-up questions you may have. If you don't have any then I hope I have earned a 5 star rating but if you don't feel that I have please don't hesitate to reply back and let me know what more I can do to assist you. Customer
If no living relatives are found what happens to her estate?
