Customer: Here is my issue. I hope you can help direct us in the right course of action. My grand-daughter lives in Ottawa. She had to put down her 12 year old love of her life female cat that she had from birth. September 20/19 she decided to adopt 2 little male kittens from Furry Tales Rescue, Smiths Falls, ON. She went to Feline Café, foster place and made her choice. She contacted Furry Tales Rescue, filled out the adoption papers for both cats. Upon acceptance of adoption, she transferred the fee of $250.00/cat. This was on September 20/19 but she was told she could only pick up the cats on Tuesday afternoon (September 24/19). When she picked up the two cats she was told by a worker at the Feline Café that she was told by one of the customers that frequented their that she had heard one of the cats (that I renamed Dingus) coughing but she had not heard him cough and that it doesn't appear to be anything to worry about. My grand-daughter, Jenny-Lee brought both cats home on Tuesday afternoon. The next day (Wednesday evening) Dingus got really sick - crusty, runny nose, diarrhea, fever, not eating, not drinking so Jenny-Lee brought Dingus to the emergency animal hospital. Dingus remained there the 25th, 26th and 27th. She was told that the cat was very sick and that they were having a lot of issues getting the fever under control. September 28th, Jenny-Lee was to pickup the Dingus, she received a call telling her that the Vet assistant had given Dingus the wrong dose of meds and that they need to keep him another 48 hrs for observation (worried about kidney function due to wrong dosage). At 6:30 am the next day September 29/19 Jenny-Lee received a phone call from the Emergency Animal Hospital informing her that Dingus had passed away. She asked for an autopsy resulting in Dingus having died of feline parvo. Jenny-Lee contacted by email the Furry Tail Rescue to report the passing away of Dingus. They told her (by return email) that both cats had received the parvo vaccine 3 times. While this was all going on, Jenny-Lee was concerned about the other cat that I renamed Doufus so she made a vet appointment for him to have him checked out as well. It turns out that he had a respiratory problem as well for which she had antibiotics for him. He has been to the vet three times now. She had been reassured today that Doufus does not have parvo. When you adopt from the Furry Tale Rescue you are supposed to receive a folder with the cat's full medical history which includes what vaccines they have received, any medical issues they may have, what vet they have seen, etc. Jenny-Lee got very little information - she was told that they were neutered, had received vaccines just not what vaccines and nothing else. The Feline Café did not report to the Furry Tale Rescue that they received a comment from a customer of one of cat's cough and this issue was never addressed. Adoptees also receive a 30 day insurance for each cat. So this is were the complaint starts. When Jenny-Lee brought Dingus to the emergency animal hospital she had to give them $1500.00 in advance for them to have a look, take care of Dingus. When all is said and done the bill came up to $2006.00. When she brought Doufus to the other vet it cost her $250.00 because she find out that the insurance had a $250.00 deductible. Jenny-Lee has just graduated from Carleton University and still does not have a full-time job so money is not plentiful. Her and her partner have been saving for close to 2 years to go on a destination wedding to Mexico in January. All their money has gone to Dingus' care. They have nothing left. Today she hears from the insurance that they will not cover anything for Dingus because they claim that his condition was pre-existing. This child has been through a lot of heartache in a very short amount of time. She had already got very attached to Dingus and now he is gone. If nothing is done she will have to cancel her trip to Mexico bec

That is all so heartbreaking. You just must feel sick for your daughter.

What your daughter can do is send Furry Tale Rescue a letter by Registered Mail. In the letter she set out the facts and demand that they reimburse her in full by a deadline that she sets.

She should state that if they fail to comply she will commence legal proceedings and then will be seeking interest and her costs.

She can then sue them in Small Claims Court and self-represent. If it gets that far and you or your daughter find you need some help as you go through the process you can always post on this site again and I can assist you further.

Does that help as a starting point?

Please feel free to post back with any follow-up questions you may have. If you don't have any then I hope I have earned a 5 star rating but if you don't feel that I have please don't hesitate to reply back and let me know what more I can do to assist you. Finally, please know that even after you rate me I will be here for you and you can ask follow-up questions if you think of them later on at no further charge of course.
