First, congratulations on your plans to start/form a non-profit. What questions can I answer for you about that process?
Attorney Wendy, Expert
Thank you for that information. I am putting together some information for you now on forming such a non-profit and will have it to you shortly.

It can be hard to determine into what category to put your non-profit. I would say that what you describe could be cultural, religious, or even educational. The key will be to work on a mission statement - what you hope to accomplish with his organization -and then see where best that mission statement seems to place the organization (do you plan to do more to educate, to celebrate, or to observe traditional practices).
The starting point for most non-profit organizations is a good group to act as the original board of directors (3-5 directors to start is good for a small group) and to work together to create bylaws that set out what your organization is going to do, how funds will be raised, and how rules will be passed.

If there will be board members who are related - by blood or marriage - then you want enough other board members that if any decisions have to be made where the related members may have a conflict of interest or may try to take total control, they can be outvoted. So, for example, if a husband and wife will both be on the board, you will likely want a board with at least 5 directors so that there are 3 unrelated ones who can be sure all decisions are made for the organization and not to benefit any single family or group of families.
