Customer: I received a phone call supposedly from Avast Premium claiming I owed some $6000 for back payments on premium security taken out in 2017. I have no recall of this and certainly as an aged pensioner would have never taken out such an expensive product. The caller was reluctant to send an email with details of the account and seeing as my accounts with you are some $40 per time I am wondering if this was a legitimate call
JA: Is there anything else the Expert should be aware of?
Customer: The readily negotiated a reduction of some $3000 in back charges but would not cancel the 'contract' . The initial contact came from an Indian whom I had great difficulty in understanding. They gave me a contact number(###) ###-####but that just took me back to the same call desk.

You have received a scam call.

You should not pay any money to these people.

You can contact ACORN to notify other people.

Also, if you have not done so already, you should contact your bank and change all; passwords, and credit cards for extra security.

I suggest you format your computer as well, and if you are not sure you can request computer services and they will explain how to do so.

The reason why you should reformat your computer is just in case there is a hidden virus in your computer that is tracking your key clicks and other data and sending it to parties who may commit crimes against you at a later date.

Many online crimes occur over time by a party, watching your actions through the computer. That is how they steal information for bank accounts, etc..

So, in summary:

[1] Change bank account password *****

[2] cancel credit cards and get new ones.

[3] Reformat computer.

[4] Contact ACORN

computer checked by tech support at Telstra and
fortunately it is clean. They confirmed the call was a
scam. I did get a phone number from the call centre from
the scammer 1800 571089. Avast may wish to take this up
with Telestra and have the office shut down. many thanks
